Only one year left for packaging to comply with the new regulations.
Unless exempted, foods high in saturated fats, sugars and/or sodium manufactured in or imported into Canada will be required to display the new nutrition symbol on the front of packaging from January1, 2026.
The new regulations include a number of technical points:
- Values are assessed on the larger of the Nutrition Facts table (NFT) serving size or the product's reference amount*. (*the reference quantity of the product is not necessarily the same as the DTV portion)
- Specific format and location, depending on packaging
- Several types of exemptions possible
- Some particularities for packaging assortments
This new regulation could have an impact on
- Displayed claims
- Packaging appearance (“Branding”, “Lay out”)
Other points to consider:
- Training of packaging review personnel
- New printing plates
- Printing deadlines
- Disposal of existing packaging
- Delivery times
