Health Canada - Nutritional symbol on front packaging

Only one year left for packaging to comply with the new regulations.

Unless exempted, foods high in saturated fats, sugars and/or sodium manufactured in or imported into Canada will be required to display the new nutrition symbol on the front of packaging from January1, 2026.

The new regulations include a number of technical points:

  • Values are assessed on the larger of the Nutrition Facts table (NFT) serving size or the product's reference amount*. (*the reference quantity of the product is not necessarily the same as the DTV portion)
  • Specific format and location, depending on packaging
  • Several types of exemptions possible
  • Some particularities for packaging assortments

This new regulation could have an impact on

  • Displayed claims
  • Packaging appearance (“Branding”, “Lay out”)

Other points to consider:

  • Training of packaging review personnel
  • New printing plates
  • Printing deadlines
  • Disposal of existing packaging
  • Delivery times

Whether through our training courses or in consultation, we can support you. Please feel free to forward this email to your colleagues to ensure you are in compliance with the regulations.
